Lakeshore Makers @ Herrick Library

For children in K-5th grades.  Lakeshore Makers will be teaching their popular Learn-to-Solder class for free at the library! We'll start with some safety tips and basic soldering techniques before letting you solder your very own Big Red lighthouse circuit board.

BIG ART: Hands-On Art Exploration Class

Come join us for a fun three-night class for all students, ages 7-14.  Each night we'll introduce a new subject - painting, sculpture, drawing - and have materials for students to discover new passions.  This class is offered by Ms. Cassidy at our Zeeland studio, there is no cost to attend but pre-registration is required.  Register today at EventBrite.

Minecraft Bootcamp

This Saturday course offers in depth look inside the popular Minecraft game.  Students will gain a deep understanding of 3D modeling and computer programming as they design, create, and test functional enhancements to the worlds and gameplay.  Students will work hands-on as they put into practice concepts learned in the first half of the class. Each student will receive access to their course files for continued learning, as well as a 3D printed model of one of their designs.

Cost is $60 per student, ages 7-14 welcome.  Please plan to send your son or daughter with a laptop, we have a limited number of laptops are available to use. If you plan to use one of ours, please email info@zipperlabs.org after registering.

Note: It is highly recommended that each student has a paid version of Minecraft for Windows/Mac/Linux.  We have demo versions available, but the paid version allows students to save their work and continue exploring beyond the class. IES Staff: Holiday Build Night

Need help creating a one-of-a-kind DIY gift for the IES Holiday Party?  Have an idea but need access to some special tools?  Zipper Labs is hosting IES staff on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 5-9pm to help bring these ideas to life.  Use our inspiration boards to come up with an idea, or send us one of your own ahead of time.  We can help source materials (additional cost) and provide you with tools and a semi-private space to build.

We'll have holiday snacks, drinks, and music to enjoy while you create. Cost is $10 per person or $15 per couple. To reserve your spot, please email info@zipperlabs.org on or before December 1st.

Circuits and Electronics (CLASS FULL)

This course is being offered on Wednesday afternoons at Peach Plains Elementary School in Grand Haven, MI. Mr. Phil will return to teach a new curriculum focused on electricity and simple circuits. Using both snap and custom circuits, students will learn about the fundamentals of electronic circuits, series and parallel circuits, as well as switches and solar panels. Zipper Labs will guide students through a project each week as they continue to learn new skills. Children will also learn how to safely solder using a lead-free solder and a lighthouse-shaped circuit board which they can keep and use as a holiday ornament. This is a great intro for students with interests in programming, robotics and/or electrical engineering. Note: This class will not meet on November 25th.

Introduction to 3D Design (SOLD OUT)

In this class, students in elementary or middle school will learn how to use TinkerCad to create digital 3D computer models.  We'll show you how to send these files to a 3D printer like ours, or import them into the popular Minecraft game.  You can come with ideas or browse from our inspiration books.  If you or your child are interested in engineering, design or robotics, you'll love this class.  We recommend you bring your own laptop and external mouse, but we have 6 available for use on a first come, first serve basis.

Cost is $20. Recommended ages: 8-14.

Design-Build: Flight

Come have a blast with fun hands-on projects as you design and build rockets and hovercrafts. We'll spend some time outside testing, launching and racing our creations. Digital Animation Camp for Teens

Zipper Labs is collaborating with the Holland Area Arts Council to offer this course. Students will learn about 3D design and creative storytelling while practicing techniques from traditional and digital animation. We will study the history of animation and introduce the fundamentals of good storytelling. Students will use computer software to develop a character for their very own animated short film. We'll use our 3D printer to bring their creations to life.

Minecraft: 3D Architecture

This two-day course was designed for students who love to build and create in Minecraft. We'll start with an introduction to TinkerCAD, a web-based 3D modeling tool and learn how to import custom objects into the Minecraft environment.  This is not just an introduction to Minecraft -- we'll apply design and engineering concepts to make digital masterpieces.  If your son or daughter likes Minecraft, they will love this course.

Robot Dissections

This after-school program is offered to K-8 students.  Each week students will work with Mr. Phil to take apart a household appliance and learn how it works.  Phones, computers, clocks, broken toys... you name it!  Along the way, we'll look for opportunities to teach about electronics, motors, manufacturing, and sustainability.  With safety glasses and gloves, students will learn safety measures and proper tool use.  During the last week, each student will use parts from previous weeks to create a robotic masterpiece of their own.

Design-Build for Young Engineers (SOLD OUT)

This after-school course is being offered to K-4 students in the Grand Haven area who interested in creative design and hands-on problem solving. Each of the six after-school sessions will consist of a design challenge where students work collaboratively to develop a solution to a posed problem. Teams will build prototypes from unique and creative materials. These activities serve as a fun, hands-on introduction to the world of design and engineering.

Skill development includes: problem solving, collaboration and communication, engineering fundamentals, basic algebra, material properties, presentation

DIY Holiday Gifts

Everyone will make at least two of their creations -- one for their friend/family member and another for a local community need. Light It Up!

Innokids Summer Camp - 3D Printing

You’ve probably heard about 3D printing, but have you gotten to try it yourself?  Students will sketch their very own cookie cutter design, make a computer model of it, and watch it print on a MakerBot 3D printer.  Most importantly, we’ll whip up some cookie dough on the last day to test them out.  Students will get to keep their 3D creation (and some cookies)! Cardboard Boat Regatta

We are joining Ambrose + CultureWorks in Holland's first ever Cardboard Regatta!  This event challenges creative youth teams to design, build and navigate boats made entirely of corrugated cardboard through a course on Lake Macatawa.

Starting at 1:30 pm, our teams from Innocademy and iCademy Global will have three hours to design and build a boat made of corrugated cardboard and duct tape. After an inspection and christening the competition will commence at 6:00 pm, pitting two members from each team to navigate their craft through a course on Lake Macatawa. Awards will be given to the fastest, the furthest reaching, and the best looking craft.
